| The Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine offers a 5-years osteopathic general surgery residency program based in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The program is accredited by the American Osteopathic Association and is the largest osteopathic general surgery residency program in the country. The first year of the program satisfies all of the requirements of an AOA-approved internship and upon completion of the residency program the graduate will be eligible for board certification in General Surgery by the American Board of Osteopathic Surgeons.
At PCOM the residents receive an excellent academic and operative experience with senior level residents performing approximately 250 major operations annually. The PCOM program is based on a consortium model of education with residents rotating through a total of 11 hospitals in the greater Philadelphia area. Approximately 85% of the rotation time will be spent working in 3 major hospital affiliates: Aria Health System, Crozer-Keystone Health System and The Reading Hospital & Medical Center. Several other hospitals offer additional training in subspecialty areas including vascular & endovascular surgery, pediatric surgery, surgical critical care & trauma surgery and surgical oncology.
The majority of program graduates go on to pursue additional training in both allopathic and osteopathic fellowship programs. Recent graduates have obtained fellowships in Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery, Surgical Critical Care & Trauma Surgery, Cardiothoracic Surgery, Minimally Invasive Surgery and Vascular Surgery.
